The next pipe on the work table came to me from one of our estate purchases. The stamping is the significant marker that points this out for me. The finish had a lot of grime ground into the smooth finish on the bowl and some darkening around the sides of the bowl. The bowl was heavily caked and had an overflow of thick lava on the top of the rim. It was hard to know what the rim top and inner edge of the bowl looked like under the grime.
The stem was calcified, oxidized and had tooth chatter and large deep tooth marks on the top and underside but the surface of the button was surprisingly free of damage. There was a three part inlaid C on the left of the taper stem. The pipe had promise but it was very dirty. Jeff took photos of the pipe before he started his cleanup work. He took photos of the rim top and bowl to give a clear picture of the thickness of the cake and the overflow of lava on the rim top.
It is hard to know if there is damage to the inner edge of the bowl because of the lava coat. He also took photos of the top and underside of the stem to show the oxidation, calcification, chatter and deep tooth marks.
Quick Refresh of a Comoy’s “The Everyman” 42 Bent Billiard
This shape 42 Bent Billiard is no exception. The pipe had been quite gently used before it came to my worktable. The exterior of briar and stem were greasy and dirty, and a film of lava covered most of the rim. It was hard to tell how much cake was in the bowl as the chamber walls were lined with a fair bit of the last tobacco smoked. The stem was in exceptional estate condition under the grime — very little oxidation, and almost no tooth marks at the bit.

It’s a great organization–consider joining. I quickly realised that there was very little information on the make generally, and often the information published was inaccurate. These, together with other dated examples I have seen and original catalogues have enabled me to considerably flesh out some of the previously published facts. I have also been fortunate to have had several long discussions with Jacques Cole who was at St.
I am also fortunate to have a history of the company written by Louis Comoy in the s and believe that the history given as an introduction is as definitive as possible.

The Comoy family has been involved in quality pipe making since when Francois Comoy started a company with his brothers to make collectible pipes of all kinds. The Chapuis Comoy pipe history can be said to start this far back in the process because the Comoy family had always been part of the pipe making community with its cousins, the Chapuis family. The official establishment of the beginning of the Chapuis Comoy pipe history actually takes place in The two families had worked closely together for decades prior to this date and had unofficially established the Chapuis Comoy society.
But the two factions decided to start officially pooling their resources together in , and the real Chapius Comoy collaboration had begun. The company was able to combine each of its own special methods for drying wood and making the best possible pipes into an effort that helped to develop some of the most significant creations in pipe history. But Henry Comoy had always wanted to return to Saint Claude in France, where he got his start, and start another branch of his company.
He spoke to his cousins in the Chapuis family, and the two groups decided to start the Chapuis Comoy Company in Saint Claude in The factory in Saint Claude would supply the London location with the wood and the raw materials it needed to build what was becoming known as the Chapuis Comoy pipe. As the Chapuis Comoy pipe history moved along, more names got involved and the company continued to grow. It has been handed down through generations and each generation has added its own touch to the final product.

Frank; a company with a rich history. As I learned more about the company, Bill, and the history, I decided to form my company, Greywoodie LLC, in order to make Kaywoodie and other underrepresented pipes more available to pipe smokers everywhere. Frank, as it exists today, is a combination of some of the biggest names in pipe making from the early part of the 20th Century. Sometime before , the Dinwoodie name had been discontinued and the Kaywoodie name was beginning to be used on an extensive line of pipes that was so popular, it eventually became the name of the company.
The origin of the name Kaywoodie is a combination of the letter K, from Kaufman Brothers of KBB, and wood, in reference to the briar used in their pipes. Not much is known of the original KBB company other than it was started in by the German born Kaufman brothers when they opened a small pipe shop in the Bowery section of New York City. In the back room of this shop, they made their first pipes. From this meager beginning, the Kaywoodie name and organization was to emerge.

John had a long and distinguished career in business, and had a lifelong passion for pipes as he followed the family into the briar pipe manufacturing trade. He held numerous senior posts, including that of Chairman for a wide range of organizations such as Cadogan Investments Ltd. USA ; H. Comoy Ltd. Canada ; Baden P. Morris Ltd. Australia ; C. John was a supporter of many charities and a very generous anonymous benefactor to many organisations, including the NPA.
He arranged for a number of important items connected with the trade to be deposited with the NPA. His own collection encompassed fine pipes from around the world in a variety of materials as well as trade catalogues and other ephemera connected with the industry. Generous to the last, John made arrangements for some of this material to be left to the NPA, where it will provide a lasting legacy in remembrance of this quiet and unassuming man for whom pipes were such an important part of his life.
Key items from the Adler Collection that have been presented to the Archive include the following The Imperial Company itself was formed in in response to an aggressive take over raid in Britain by American Tobacco and involved the pooling of tobacco retail outlets including closely related items such as briar pipes.

Also, as information about the various “second” lines, such as Guildhall, Everyman, Astor, etc. I’m not a collector of Comoy pipes specifically, but enough of them have passed through my collection over the past 20 years for me to have gotten some sense of determining at least the relative age of them. About a year ago, I started trying to make some real sense of this, and though this is going to be a lengthy project, involving much more research and “pipe archaeology,” I thought I’d share my current thoughts and speculations, and solicit any additional information which must exist out there in Cyberia.

Because it is molded rather than carved, clay may make up the entire pipe or just the bowl, but most other materials have stems made separately and detachable. Often a silver band is used to connect the bowl to the detachable stem. In the UK, sterling silver spigots or ferrules bear Assay Office’s hallmarks which allow to date the pipes and obtain information about their maker, mounter or importer.
In most cases these objects weren’t presented to hallmarking by silversmiths but by importers, retailers and pipe mounters who were identified in Assay Office’s ledgers as “tobacconists”, “pipe makers” or “pipe mounters”. The tobacconist is an expert dealer in tobacco in various forms and related accessories as pipes, lighters, matches, pipe cleaners, pipe tampers, ashtrays, cigar cutters or “novelties”.
